Four Serious Games and Simulations Designed for Healthcare / Medical / Pharmaceutical / Nursing Training Win Awards in Annual International Competition  


TorontoOctober 11, 2023Two educational games and two educational simulations developed for Healthcare / Medical / Pharmaceutical / Nursing training have been cited for excellence in the 2023 International Serious Play Awards Program.  


Gold Medals went to the following: 

  • SLIPS – Second Life Island for Preventing Suicide is designed as a complement to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) training, targeting behavioral health providers, especially those working with military-connected adults facing suicidal crises. This immersive virtual environment offers interactive activities to reinforce clinical skills in suicide risk assessment, safety planning, lethal means safety counseling, and relapse prevention, catering to both CBT-SP graduates and standalone players. With expert feedback embedded throughout the game, SLIPS provides a comprehensive and engaging platform for enhancing suicide prevention expertise. SLIPS was created in partnership with 2b3d Studios. 

  • Distress! – Grendel Games has introduced an interactive training application aimed at enhancing hospital responses to deteriorating patients. This comprehensive tool, designed for inpatient nurses and rapid response team members, simulates real-life scenarios, offering learners the opportunity to make critical decisions and improve their response coordination. By bridging the gap between traditional didactic teaching and in-situ simulation programs, this application serves as a primary teaching tool and cognitive aid, ultimately contributing to better patient outcomes. 

  • Supporting People with IDD and Alzheimer’s – Second Avenue Learning, in collaboration with The Golisano Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association, has transformed caregiver training for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) living with Alzheimer’s disease. By reimagining in-person training in a virtual 3D space, the innovative simulations offer direct support professionals and family caregivers a self-paced, immersive experience that fosters empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by those with IDD and Alzheimer’s. These simulations, completed from the patient’s first-person perspective, provide immediate remediation, enhancing the impact of the training on both primary and secondary audiences. 



Bronze Medal went to the following: 

  • Blink Land Developed in collaboration with the American Optometric Association, this casual mobile game targets players aged eight and above, delivering essential eye health knowledge through engaging visual feedback. By combining facts, trivia, calls to action, and mini-games, Blink Land encourages active learning, rewarding players with points and rankings after each gameplay session. Created by Midnight Hour Games in partnership with the American Optometric Association and Playcrafting,
