Nine Serious Tabletop/Board Games Cited in Annual International Serious Play Awards Competition

 

 

Toronto — October 17, 2023 — Nine educational Tabletop/Board games have been cited for excellence in the 2023 International Serious Play Awards Program 

 

Gold Medals went to the following: 

  •  

    +PlusOut!! Battle Points: a K-12 Education category winner, offering a Tug-of-War Strategy Numbers Game designed to enhance STEM skills for 2nd to 5th graders. Players engage in tactical moves, boosting confidence in STEM, number sense, mental math, and more. Customizable for educators and organizations, this award-winning game fosters math confidence and skill-building while encouraging strategic thinking and problem-solving

  • Lemonade Stand Off: A K-12 Education category winner, “Lemonade Stand Off was developed in collaboration with Acton Academy. It is a game in which students learn the critical business principle of market segmentation. Played in both Acton Academy K-12 schools and the Acton business school’s MBA program, the game confronts players with the challenges of entrepreneurship. Students learn to observe customers, competitors and current events and to launch a sustainable market strategy – first in the game then later in a real marketplace.

  • Triangle Puzzle Card Game: Introducing the Triangle Puzzle Card Game, a creative educational tool for elementary and high school students designed to teach geometry concepts through play, experimentation, and problem-solving. With four difficulty levels and visually engaging geometric puzzles, the game fosters patience, visual thinking and fine motor skills, while supporting students’ mastery of geometry. The game is an innovative approach to geometry education, encouraging both individual and group learning

 

Silver Medals went to the following: 

  • Mercedes Benz Mobility – SPACE 5 Strategy Game: A Silver Award went to Mercedes-Benz Mobility for their SPACE 5 Strategy Game, an innovative approach to strategic activation, engaging all 11,000 employees across 34 countries, entered in the Corporate/Vocational Skills category. This collaborative board game fosters an understanding of the company’s strategy, strategic choices, and customer-centric approach while enhancing competition and team collaboration. Developed by Workz A/S in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG, the title demonstrates a creative approach to strategic communication

  • Money Smarts – My Financial Journey. Another a K-12 Education category winner, is an educational board game designed to teach financial concepts, particularly aimed at Indigenous Canadians aged 12 to 17. Going beyond individual wealth accumulation, this game emphasizes community values like giving and sharing. Developed to address socioeconomic gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, “Money Smarts” fosters financial literacy and decision-making skills, making it relevant not only in Indigenous communities but also for anyone looking to enhance their financial well-being. Collaboratively created with Indigenous financial literacy experts and artists, the game highlights community-based mechanics and is supported by the National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association (NACCA) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)

  • Promesa: A groundbreaking cooperative board game that challenges colonial narratives and highlights the real-life struggles of present-day Puerto Ricans received a Silver Award in the Non-Profit category, Players take on the role of the local government, striving to eliminate Puerto Rico’s debt before natural catastrophes strike. The game’s unique mechanics involve balancing a symbolic debt represented by black gems, reflecting the hardships faced by the people of Puerto Rico. Developed through MIT Game Lab workshops and an artist residency program, “Promesa” sheds light on the island’s contemporary issues and resilience

  • Race To Infinity Maths: An engaging math board game designed to make mathematics enjoyable and reduce anxiety among children aged 6 to 13 also picked up a silver in the K-12 Education category. With a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, the game provides a fun way for kids to practice all four math operations and multiplication times tables. Developed by BeGenio, this resource encourages replay and deepens mathematical skills while assisting parents and educators in supporting children’s math education both at home and in the classroom.

 

Bronze Medals went to the following:

Administrator Adventure: A Health System’s Journey to High Performance: An interactive game that provides an insightful look into the complex roles and challenges faced by healthcare administrators striving to lead high-performance healthcare organizations picked up a Bronze Award in the Healthcare/Medical/Pharmaceutical/Nursing category. Developed by the University of North Texas Health Science Center, the game serves as an educational tool, introducing students to common health system care settings and the three key categories of quality, workforce and resources. By playing collaboratively, students can mitigate negative events while preparing for real-world challenges in health management and policy.
 
N.O.V.E.L.- Newly Observed Variant of Extreme Lethality: A cooperative board game that offers players an engaging and educational experience earned a Bronze in the K12 category. The game mirrors real-world vaccine development processes, with players working together to research, create, test and distribute a vaccine prototype to save humanity from a deadly disease. Designed for 2-4 players aged 10 and above, N.O.V.E.L. promotes cooperation and resource-sharing, aligning with the real scientific collaboration needed in vaccine development.
