Making Esports Our Own: Stories of Academic Esports

Julie Mavrogeorge: I am passionate about providing students with technology opportunities for college & career. I am a STEAM & Esports Coordinator for a district with 74,000 students in which I oversee our district-wide esports program for K-12 students using Minecraft and traditional esports. Our elementary school program teaches students coding, design, and engineering with Redstone in Minecraft to prepare them to enter our secondary program that includes game design, graphic design, coding, video production, shout casting, drones, and robotics as part of our larger esports program. My accomplishments within our district have been highlighted by Minecraft, NAECAD, and CDW and I’ll be giving a “Lightning-Talk” on Mentorship & Fellowship in Esports at ISTE. I’m currently crafting a comprehensive program with industry partners that will provide parents, students, and coaches valuable training in inclusivity, health & wellness, and mentorship. The next step, create a California Esports Association to compete nationally with other Interstate Association schools.
