Game-inspired Narrative Design to Support Compassion Training with Virtual Patients
Nataly Martini graduated as a pharmacist and holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. After moving to New Zealand, her interest in interprofessional education (IPE) started in 2007 when she co-developed and coordinated a fully online global education project which saw over 200 international students and mentors voluntarily take part to develop health resources for an impoverished community. The positive feedback and interest in the project spurred the development of a similar project, involving five disciplines, in 2009. With minimal IPE opportunities within her own faculty, and the need for healthcare students to meet graduate profile attributes, she developed virtual patient simulations to teach clinical reasoning, collaboration, communication, and compassion in undergraduate health sciences students.
