I will introduce a digital and interactive non-linear story created on Twine, which is open online software. The project I'll show is a simulation of a student's first day at university. The player is supposed to navigate the actions of the student on their first day. This game is designed to expose the student to what they'll go through on the first day of university. The game's ultimate goal is to motivate students about the university and make them feel ready for the experience. I want to provide insight into how these interactive stories could be used on orientation days at universities when teenagers are exposed to a brand-new environment. In this session, I will show how university orientation talks given by advisors could be turned into a digital game. In the interactive activity part, I want the audience to create a manual non-linear story and engage with the playful idea of learning through interactive stories rather than direct instruction.

Attendee Benefits

Attendees will learn about a new online software for game development and how this software could be benefited from in higher education contexts. They will create non-linear stories and engage with the playful idea of learning through interactive stories rather than direct instruction. I will guide them to think about in what else contexts interactive non-linear stories could be used in higher education. Furthermore, how could these games could be integrated into primary education as well. My goal will be to lead the attendees to think about innovative ways to integrate contemporary tools and software into everyday education contexts while abandoning direct instruction methods. Therefore, attendees will learn something new about how direct instruction could be replaced by innovative and interactive practices in educational contexts.
