Starting in 1979, the choose-your-own-adventure books helped make reading more exciting for people all over the world. Since then, gamified reading has taken many twists and turns including games like “Walden, a game” and “Firewatch” where reading is transformed into narrative open world simulations. In this talk, we’ll walk the audience through a historical analysis of the cross pollination of reading and games. We’ll talk about the best design practices for making reading more engaging through gamification. And we’ll show you a game project, Finnegan, that our team has created which aims to allow the reader to read stories and even create the story’s ending through an online gamified platform.

Attendee Benefits

Attendees will get the chance to try out different gamified reading platforms throughout the workshop to give their feedback and help come up with a more complete list of best practices as a takeaway.
