This presentation focuses on the application of the Art of Serious Game Design methodology during the concept development stage for the design of two serious games. We found that, when used during game conception, the Art of Serious Game Design methodology led to ideas for storytelling and empathy and allowed the serious game design and development team to incorporate these ideas into a final game proposal. However, where the Art of Serious Game Design methodology was not used, the produced game drafts functioned well on a gameplay level, but were lacking in engagement or flow, resulting in lost time and resources.
Attendee Benefits
The Art of Serious Game Design approach presents specific benefits that may appeal to multidisciplinary serious game design teams because it increases communication between team members through design artifacts that ensure equal input from team members in brainstorming and decision making. We conclude that the Art of Serious Game Design methodology approach offers fluidity and tangibility via its artifacts, which makes it an asset for a serious game design team.
